A Shepherd, an Elephant, and a Blessing: How We Cover Our Children in Love
Speaking life over our children—guiding, protecting, and loving them like Jesus does.
I wasn’t with my daughters last night—they’re in PRTF for a season.
Instead, I sat with a pen in my hand, writing to them—covering them in words when my arms couldn’t reach.
A shepherd knows each sheep by name. When they wander, he calls them back. When storms come, he shields them.
Elephants circle around their young, forming a wall of protection. They don’t leave them exposed. They don’t let them face the world alone.
I can’t be there to smooth their hair or whisper prayers over them as they sleep. But my words go where I cannot. My prayers stretch beyond walls.
So this single mom writes.
✨ You are seen, known, and never alone.
✨ You are deeply loved—not for what you do, but for who you are.
✨ You belong—to me, to Jesus, to the arms of the Good Shepherd who never lets go.
A blessing doesn’t need hands to hold—it only needs a heart that won’t stop speaking.
I will keep writing. Keep praying. Keep speaking life over them.
Because blessing our children isn’t about proximity—it’s about presence.
And I will never stop reminding them of the One who holds them, even when I cannot.
Sheep, Elephants & Speaking Life Over Our Children
We learned in the last letter, sheep can recognize up to 50 faces—including their shepherd’s? 🐑 Scientists have found that sheep remember the people who care for them and feel safe when they see a familiar face. They build friendships, protect one another, and even feel stress when separated from their flock.
And isn’t that what we all long for? To be seen, known, and protected?
Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd, and we are His sheep. That means He knows us by name, watches over us, and never abandons us.
Just like a shepherd calls his sheep back and an elephant shields her young, we as parents are called to protect, guide, and bless our children.
Lessons from the Herd: Protecting and Guiding Our Children
🐘 Elephants are some of the most protective animals in the world. A mother elephant doesn’t just care for her baby—the entire herd surrounds it, shields it, and teaches it how to navigate the world. If danger comes, they circle around their young, creating a living wall of protection.
🐘 Elephants pass down wisdom. Older elephants teach younger ones where to find food and water, how to avoid danger, and how to survive. Their knowledge shapes generations.
🐘 Elephants never leave their own behind. If a baby elephant stumbles, the herd lifts it up. They walk together, ensuring that no one is left behind.
And isn’t that exactly what we do when we pray for our children, speak blessings over them, and declare God’s promises into their lives?
Just as an elephant protects, leads, and surrounds its young, we cover our children in prayer, speaking truth over them and guiding them toward Jesus.
WWJD? (What Would Jesus Do?)
Jesus not only watches over us—He teaches us how to love and protect each other.
🐑 Sheep recognize and protect their flock.
🤍 Are we recognizing the people in our lives who need love, encouragement, and protection?
🐘 Elephants surround their young with protection and wisdom.
🤍 Are we covering our children in the wisdom and love of God?
🐑 Sheep follow their shepherd’s voice and trust Him.
🤍 Are we following Jesus’ example in how we treat others—speaking life, offering grace, and pointing them to the Good Shepherd?
Jesus blesses us not just through words, but through His actions.
So, let’s do the same.
A Blessing for My Daughters
May you always hear the voice of the Good Shepherd calling your name, even when the world feels confusing. I bless you with ears to recognize His whispers, a heart to receive His love, and a spirit that knows you are never alone.
I declare over you: You are not lost, forgotten, or unseen. You are chosen, known, and cherished by Jesus, who leads you with kindness and calls you His own.
May the peace of the Lord cover you like the gentle embrace of a shepherd gathering His lambs. May His truth anchor you when doubts arise and His presence comfort you in every season.
I speak life over you: You are deeply loved, completely safe in His hands, and created for a purpose beyond what you can see right now. May your faith grow strong, not from pressure, but from the quiet assurance that you belong to the One who laid down His life just for you.
You will know His voice. You will walk in His peace. You will never be without His love.
In Jesus’ name, I bless you. Amen.
How to Speak Blessings Over Your Children
1️⃣ Use Scripture as Your Foundation 📖
God’s Word is alive and powerful (Hebrews 4:12). Declare His truth over your child. Example:
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." — Psalm 23:1
🔹 Blessing: May you always trust that God provides for you and leads you in the right path.
2️⃣ Call Out Their Identity in Christ ✨
Instead of focusing on who they are right now, speak into who God is shaping them to be.
🔹 "You are a light in this world. God has set you apart for something beautiful."
3️⃣ Speak Protection and Strength Over Their Future 🛡️
🔹 "I bless you with wisdom and courage. May you always stand strong in faith, knowing that Jesus is your refuge and guide."
4️⃣ Bless Them in Every Season—Even in Doubt 🌱
Blessing isn’t about perfection. It’s about reminding them that God is with them, even when they’re unsure.
🔹 "May you never feel pressure to have all the answers—only to trust that God holds them all."
Reflection Questions:
How can you begin speaking blessings over your children today?
Who in your life needs to be reminded that they are seen, loved, and protected by Jesus?
What is one promise from God’s Word you want to declare over your family?
Let’s Pray Together:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for entrusting these precious children to us. Help us to speak life, not fear over them—to bless them with truth, identity, and confidence in Your love. May our words build them up and remind them that they are seen, known, and held by You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Decree & Declare:
I decree and declare that my child is covered in the love of the Good Shepherd. They will know His voice, walk in His peace, and never be without His presence.
May your faith grow strong, not from pressure, but from the quiet assurance that you belong to the One who laid down His life just for you.
